Spares package:
Comprossor spares - NOS CA3080E chip, 3PDT switch, in/out jack, 2 screws $20 [Add $20.00]Hard to find chip and some useful spares in case of breakage.

Modification:
NOS 1979 RCA Compressor chip $5 [Add $5.00]We always use New Old Stock (NOS) CA3080E chips in our comps, I don't think any other well-known brands are still using them. They were made by RCA, then Harris, then Intersil as the company was renamed over the years. We have some original 1979 RCA CA3080E chips that I have been saving for years, so I am putting them up as an option. I don't think they sound much different, but they are the exact same ones used in the old grey Ross compressors so it's pretty cool to have one in your pedal.

Description

The Analog Man Large Comprossor is an improved, updated ROSS compressor with clear, smooth tone.
Mark Marshall demo with Rick 12 string and optional RYCK toggle.
Features

REV5 version with MIX control now available!

We have very light, almost off-white cases available, same size as the dark grey but not textured.

Standard COMPROSSOR

  1. Ross compressor specs with hand tested, selected transistors and NOS CA3080E chip.
  2. External attack knob on large comprossor starting in 2005
  3. MIX knob standard. Turn it up all the way for no dry sound blended in, like our older versions and Dynacomp, Ross, etc. Turn it down all the way for no compression, just a great clean boost/buffer pedal. Best set fairly high where you get just enough of the DRY signal to have the normal guitar feel.
  4. Attack knob has a detent at 12:00 which is the standard Ross/ Dynacomp attack setting.
  5. True Bypass with 3PDT switch
  6. LED with bezel
  7. Power jack standard, no extra charge. You can plug a Boss style 2.1mm x 5.5mm barrel 9V DC adaptor into this jack. Works great at 12V or 15V (ultimate).
  8. Euro RE'AN jacks for best noise isolation and operation. They are more expensive than the metal Mexican Switchcraft jacks that others use, but the benefits outweigh the cost.
  9. Expensive high quality NOS Matsushita/Panasonic capacitors.
  10. Easily repaired if damaged- no custom parts like a mass-produced pedal.
  11. Built in a grey hammer-finish powdercoated box (4" x 5" x 2.25") with silkscreened graphics, or optionally as the Small CompROSSor in the smaller box (2.5" x 4.75" x 1.5" not including jacks, switch, etc) with hand stamped graphics.
  12. Top jacks are available, but IN and OUT labels are still down by the switch.

Below is the previous 3 knob version, with no mix knob.

Rev4 circuit

In April, 2013 we really improved the COMPROSSOR circuit. Mike had been playing in a band for a few years, and noticed that SOME pedals on his board would not drive a load well, they would get dark and dull, due to a bad (high) output impedance. This is easily tested by running pedals into something like a low impedance volume pedal, with a switchable buffer between them. The ARDX20 with the delay level down is excellent for testing - when ON it's a great buffer, when OFF it's true bypassed. To test a pedal, simply turn the buffer on and off and listen for a change in tone. With most pedals, like our Chorus, Juicer, etc, there is no difference - they can drive the signal to your amp through long cables or volume pedals no problem. But the Comprossor sounded dull when the buffer was removed. The original Ross, Dynacomp, and all the other Ross clones do the same exact thing- they really need a buffer after them to sound good.

Also these pedals don't have a very loud output, especially when you hit them hard, for example with humbuckers or a boosted signal. One other problem all these pedals have is phase reversal - they flip the phase of your signal when you turn them ON. This may not be a problem for most people, but if you split your signal and combine it, or run into two amps, the out of phase signals will cancel and you will get a VERY thin sound. Also, for use as a clean boost, there was too much compression even with the SUSTAIN pot all the way down. So we reduced the minimum compression amount, without changing the maximum amount. Now the pedal is more usable as a clean boost, and also sounds great left on all the time as a tone sweetener/buffer. It's great stacked into dirt pedals, chorus, vibes, etc now. The REV4 boards are usually blue.

All of these problems are fixed in the REV4 circuit -

  1. Excellent output impedance for a clearer tone with no signal loss or need for a buffer
  2. More available output for boosting your amp
  3. No phase reversal
  4. Less compression available

Rev5 circuit

This is pretty much the same as REV4 with the addition of a MIX control, which can go from full dry (no compression) to full wet (same as REV4). Mixing in dry gives you the more of the normal attack of the note, which can be compressed away on a normal comp. When set at full dry, the pedal becomes a clean boost/buffer pedal and makes pedals after it sound really great, with more presence.

Ryck toggle option

The Dynacomp and Ross circuit is not very bright, to keep white noise down. But sometimes it's nice to have a bright trebly tone, as heard on Rickenbacker guitar's built-in compressor. Looking at the Rickenbacher schematic, it's about the same as the Dyna/Ross except it allows more treble for that jingle-jangle sound. We decided to offer this with a three-way switch so you can get just the amount of treble you want. One position is the normal Dynacomp/Ross value for about the same tone as OFF and low noise. The second position adds a bit more treble and just a touch of noise - this may be great to use all the time with a dark guitar like a Les Paul with high output pickups. The third position is twice as bright, close to the Rickenbacker setting, for a sound that really pops, with a bit of noise that you won't notice till you stop playing. We can put this toggle on any of our new CompROSSor or Dynacomp pedals when ordered, or we can add it later on which costs a bit more as it's more work to add it after the pedal is built.

5 of 5 the Best Compressor on the Planet February 11, 2021
Reviewer: Rakesh Rai from Singapore, Asia Singapore
I have tried BOSS, IBANEZ, ROCKTRON, DOD, ZOOM, etc. but nothing beats this Monster Comprossor. Thick round tone, yet super clean, more like a recorded studio sound. It is amazing how AnalogMan came up with this type of unique compressor tone. It's priceless circuitry does not burn a hole in your pockets. Excellent for pedalboard placement right before your distortions/overdrives.

5 of 5 Holy S**T...YES!! March 20, 2018

I have 5 AM pedals and this is the newest edition.  Just plopped it at the end of my signal chain, and literally out of the box it made everything sound better.  Played for about 3 hours on it and couldn't be happier.  Can't wait to play my rig with the COMPROSSOR.  I even have a KoT and this COMPROSSOR competes as being the most important pedal on the board.  Buy it.  Once you have it, you'll know.

5 of 5 Great Tone + Versatile + Quiet = AWESOME May 15, 2014
Reviewer: teletwang from Alpharetta, GA, USA
The tone produced by the pedal is outstanding and the ability to change the attack and release means you don't have to settle for the stock Ross "Nashville squash".

As is the case with all AM pedals, it is dead quiet, a feature that sets it apart from your standard, mass-produced stuff.

If you're wondering whether you want the Ryck option, you do.  Even if you don't play "darker" guitars.  The Ryck option sounds great on my Strat and on my Tele, especially in combinations that use the neck pickup.

If you're looking for a compressor that just smooths out the rough edges, without squashing your tone - a la traditional Ross/MXR pedal - this is what you're looking for.

Highly recommended.

5 of 5 Impressed with Comprossor February 2, 2014
Reviewer: Greg from USA
My children purchased the large box Comprossor with three way toggle for me as a Christmas gift at my request. I had read about it in my Tonequest Report and for some reason decided I wanted to have one, although being mostly a basement player I am trying to refrain from purchasing more "stuff."

I tried it out late Christmas morning and within a half an hour or so dubbed it the "Magic Pedal." The tones I enjoyed were unbelievable given the fact that I was using the same guitars and amp that I had always been using. Since that time I have been using it with my other guitars and amps, and cannot believe what it does for my overall tone. As a clean boost it bridges that little gap between the guitar volume on 10 and an overdrive pedal. With overdriven tone it adds different nuances. And when I use it with my boost pedal... I could go on and on. I spoke with David Wilson at Tonequest this afternoon about an unrelated issue and just mentioned my pedal and how satisfying it has been. He suggested I let YOU know how I am enjoying it. I just assumed that you know you make a great product. And if you didn't I'm telling you now. It's unbelievable to me that every "tonehound" doesn't own a GOOD compressor.
