Features
A meticulous re-creation of the benchmark phaser.

This is the CSP026 hand-wired custom shop version of the Phase-90. It's the only one like it, the cheaper models that MXR make with an LED are not the same, they are not hand wired and do not have the same script logo circuit.

Analog Mike compared this new pedal to the original 1974 Phase-90 on his pedalboard and found it's just as great sounding! So we are carrying them now and selling them stock or with some convenience mods.
The long-time standard among phasers, the MXR Phase 90 is on the list of many players and even more collectors. Carefully recreated, this famous effect is available once again as the 1974 Vintage Phase 90. Hand wiring and hand selected matching transistors work together to bring back the same mesmerizing, smooth modulation as the original. You'll even find the same classic orange painted metal housing with the script logo.

MXR effects have set the standard for tone and durability for more than 25 years. From time-honored classics to new cutting edge designs, MXR has your sound.

MXR CSP-026 Handwired 1974 Vintage Phase 90 Pedal Features:

  • Hand-wired circuit board built
  • 1974 spec components
  • Switchcraft input/output jacks
  • Carling bypass switch (hard bypass, true bypass is an option)
  • Hand-selected transistors matched to produce warm, deep phasing
  • Original Script logo
  • Orange finish
  • No power jack or LED (we can add these as options)
Phase in the sound of the past and change your tone's future.

Analog Man Added options

The stock bypass tone is not bad, almost no measurable resistance or capacitance when OFF or audible change in tone. But there are quite a few reports of phase bleed-through when the pedal is OFF with the stock bypass. So we will offer true bypass mods on this pedal. The bypass mod is needed if you want to add an off/off status LED. Power jack option is cheaper if you get the bypass mod as the bypass mod will cover the labor for both. Or you can use the Z Vex power plate for powering the pedal through the battery clip without a power jack. You can put the power plate in the shopping cart from our Z Vex area.
Optional power jack will fit ABOVE or BELOW the INPUT or OUTPUT jack so let us know if you have a preference. Otherwise we will probably put it ABOVE the INPUT jack (on the right of the knob).

Volume Trimpot Option

Some people notice an apparent volume drop (or volume boost) when the Phase-90 is turned ON. It may be even worse with a true bypass mod, as the OFF sound will be totally clear and unchanged from what is seen at the input. We can add a small trimpot on the board so you can set the ON volume where you want it, even a little volume boost if desired.

The volume trimpot we add is in the corner of the board. The stock BIAS trimpot is near the switch. You can adjust the bias by ear while playing to get a smoother/mellower, or more pronounced Phase sound if you want:

MIX KNOB OPTION

We can add a small external MIX knob to the Phase-90 so you can set the mix between phased sound and dry sound. Exact stock setting and sound is 50%, with the knob at noon, t
here is a DETENT on the pot at that setting. This is the normal sound and the thickest/most effected as the vibrato mixes with the dry to make the phase cancellations. You can get a more subtle effect by turning it down, or more of a VIBRATO effect (not as intense of a sound) by turning it up. When turned from the stock 12:00 setting, the volume may go up, you can get it back down with the volume trimpot. So you should get both mods if you think you will change it much from the stock mix setting.

Note that the rubber knob cover may rub on the added knob.

BUFFER OPTION

The phase-90 has a high output impedance, so it cannot drive long cables, volume pedals, etc without losing volume and tone. So you should run something buffered after it, usually your delay pedal will be all you need if it's always on. If you don't have a buffered pedal after it, you should get our BUFFER option in which we add our buffer board in the battery compartment, and a power jack. See our BUFFER page for more info :

PHASE-45 TOGGLE OPTION

We can add a toggle switch to change the circuit into a milder, 2 stage phaser. One position is the normal phase-90 and the other is phase-45. The phase-45 changes your sound less and is a little closer to a uni-vibe sound. In Phase-45 mode, the FEEDBACK option does not function. There will be a POP when you switch the toggle, best to turn the pedal off if you need to change the mode during a session.

FEEDBACK KNOB

We can add a FEEDBACK KNOB to add more effect to the phase, especially the higher frequencies. We can't add too much or the pedal will squeal and whistle. If you have the VOLUME trimpot, be careful as increasing the volume may cause this loud squealing feedback at higher volume levels. The stock script logo FEEDBACK setting is all the way down. For the block logo sound, turn it up about half way. This does not work with the Phase45 toggle option position.

Note : Mod and option prices are cheaper when you buy the pedal from us, see mod form for prices on sending in your pedal for a mod. MOD FORM IS HERE

BIAS TRIMPOT

All Custom Shop Phase-90 pedals have a BIAS trimpot, we usually change it to one of our more durable ones if you get mods. THis is what it does:

5 of 5 Greater Than August 5, 2021
Reviewer: Brett Huhn from Maryland, US
Friends pointed me at this pedal because I laughed at phaser sounds I heard. It sounds epic with all of my guitars and has a lush sound when set mild with the wet turned slightly back. The volume setting is very handy and if you have buffers around, this is the ticket to fantastic phasing sound, as far as this doubter is concerned. My Script stays on more than it probably should. One of my favorite pedals now. Thanks AM Crew!! This is greater than I thought it would be …, Epic is the word maybe?

5 of 5 Glorious sounding phaser (And amazing buffer mod) August 5, 2016
Reviewer: Morten W from Norway
I bought the Handwired 1974 Vintage Phase 90 from Analogman with these mods/additions: True bypass, buffer, orange LED, internal volume pot. I've had several phasers, but this is hands down the best sounding phaser pedal I've ever heard. So musical. One knob is all you need. I use the Phase 90 first in the chain, and Analogman's buffer has really made a huge impact on my overall sound. I use nine pedals, so I guess a buffer was long overdue. Definitely brought back a lot of sparkly highs. The buffer has basically made my whole sound come alive. Feels like I'm plugging straight into the amp, even with a medium/big-sized pedalboard. So, the Analogman mod. Phase 90 has suddenly become the single most important pedal on my pedalboard. Recommended!

5 of 5 search over October 19, 2014
Reviewer: Chase Hendricks from Rexburg, ID United States
i have tried every phaser ever.  mxr evh, small stone w/analogman mods, sub decay, and a load of others, none of them gave me what i was looking for.  This one does, i have the boss style power and true bypass mods with a led.  Its rock solid and sounds great on any setting.  not a bunch of knobs to screw up.  It stopped my search.  I haven't had a problem with volume drop or increase but i see theirs a mod for this, i'm scared extra knobs will just screw it up.  but to each his own.  adding a analog man buffer seems like a better compromise.

5 of 5 Captures the tone! November 6, 2012
Reviewer: Anonymous Person from Park Ridge, IL United States
Decided that I needed a phase pedal for some Led Zep covers (In My Time of Dying, etc) and tried out many high-end phase pedals at local shops. Ended up preferring the MXR over pedals costing much more. Since I desired a 9v power option, buying from Analogman was a no-brainer. Granted, I don't engage this pedal very often, but it definitely provides that vintage phase tone when needed.
